June Workshops for Childcare Providers

Two different workshops for childcare providers will be offered this month. These FREE workshops are sponsored by MPL's Ready to Read with Books2Go program. Call 286-8423 to register. Ready to Read.jpgLetter Knowledge College: Teaching the Alphabet
The Public Library Association and Association for Library Service to Children have identified Six Skills all children need to be prepared to learn to read when they enter school. Letter Knowledge is one of the six skills. During this workshop you will explore fun ways to expose children ages 0-5 to this skill. This workshop will delve into ways to help children recognize the differences between how letters look, their names, and their sounds---all while having fun! This workshop includes a practical make and take. Earn 1.5 hours continuing education by attending.

Child Care Providers and The Library: A Partnership that Works for YOU

The library has many resources to assist child care providers with curriculum planning, but sometimes knowing how and where to find those resources can be a challenge! During this hands-on session, child care providers will learn about resources at the library that can be used to enhance their curriculum and planning. Learn how to search the library catalog, locate library materials and plan activities using these resources. Leave this session with a plan you can use the next day. Participants are encouraged to bring their valid Books2Go library cards or personal library cards. Limited to 15 participants. Earn 2 ½ hours of continuing education by attending.

Wonderful Words!: Developing Vocabulary
The research is clear that the more words a child hears the stronger their vocabulary becomes. And a strong vocabulary means stronger reading skills. This session will focus on understanding why an enriched vocabulary is essential and how to help children develop their vocabulary through fun age-appropriate activities. 1.5 hours of continuing education earned by attending this workshop.

Come learn about all the resources the library has to assist with your curriculum planning! During this session, learn how to search the library catalog, locate library materials and plan activities using these resources. Leave this workshop with a plan you can use the next day.

Participants are encouraged to bring their valid Books2Go library cards or personal library cards.

Limited to 15 participants. Attendees will earn 2 ½ hours of continuing education credit. Registration begins August 19th. Please call (414) 286-8423 to sign up.

Rhymers will be Readers!

What's all the excitement about rhyme? Why is rhyming so important? To find out, come to the free Rhymers will be Readers workshop from MPL's Ready to Read with Books2Go program for child care providers.

Come Rhyme Playtime Rhymes Rhyming Dust Bunnies

Rhyming is part of phonological awareness, which is one of the most important early literacy skills. Research suggests that children who start school with this skill in place tend to have an easier time learning to read. The best time to help children develop this skill is before they start formal schooling.

During this interactive workshop, you will learn about phonological awareness and how to help children develop this skill through simple activities, games, and music. Learn how phonological awareness can be fostered throughout your day with minimal planning.

Registration is required this program, so please call (414) 286-8423 to sign up. Also, please remember this program is for adults only. Workshop attendees will earn 1.5 hours of continuing education credits.
