Center Street Library: A Week Long Celebration to Remember

Film and Discussion - Marcus Garvey: Toward Black Nationhood 6-8 P.M.
Presented by Dr. Doreatha Mbalia, Associate Professor of Africology at the University of WI-Milwaukee and Member of Africans on the Move.

"This video covers the life and contributions of Marcus Garvey from his birth in Jamaica, his re-location to the U.S., and his final days in Jamaica. Most importantly, it highlights the invaluable contribution that the Universal Negro Improvement Association-African Communities League (UNIA-ACL) made to all people of African descent, including the creation of the red, black and green flag."


Tour of Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum, 12 P.M.
Tour Location is at 2620 West Center Street. Co-Sponsored by Africans on the Move.

Enjoy a tour of the previous location of the Center Street Library and a viewing of a special, limited exhibit on Marcus Garvey and the United Negro Improvement Association (UNIA), including original paintings by Milwaukee's own artist, Ammar.

A generous donation has been given to allow twenty people to tour WBHSM for free. Additional tours available at the standard fee of $5.00. Due to limited space, registration is required. Please call (414) 286-3090 to register.

Tours of Center Street Library, 1-2 P.M.
Come and join us for a tour if you are new to our library or would like to learn more about our building, programs, services, materials, technology, and artwork by local artists.

Family Play Night, 6 P.M.
Families with children age 5 and younger can enjoy a light supper followed by fun family play activities designed to develop the Six Skills of Early Literacy.
Children must be accompanied by an adult. To register, stop in the library or call (414) 286-3090. Walk-ins welcome if space is available.


Family Movie Night - Akeelah and the Bee 5:30 P.M.
Bring your family and friends and share in this uplifting movie about a young girl’s determination to succeed in the world of spelling bees. Light Refreshments Provided.


Center Street Anniversary Party, 1:30-4 P.M.
Presentation of Mayoral Proclamation and MPL Board of Trustees Resolution.
History of Center Street Library: 1928-2008. Music and food provided.
