Hypnerotomachia Poliphili--A Rare Books Program

Come to Central Library on September 6th from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. for the latest program in the Richard E. and Lucile Krug Rare Books Room Educational Series.

The Hypnerotomachia Poliphili (Poliphilo’s Strife of Love in a Dream) was published in Venice in 1499 by Aldus Manutius. With 171 woodcut illustrations it is considered by many scholars to be the most beautiful printed book of the Renaissance. MPL is the only library in Wisconsin to own a copy. Mysteries of authorship, language and intent surround this book which was featured prominently in the bestselling book The Rule of Four.

Italian researcher Stefano Questioli will speak about its plot, historical context, illustrations, and mysteries. Questioli, a former researcher at the Instituto Nazionale di Archeologia e Storia dell’Arte in Rome, is the artistic consultant at the Italian Cultural Institute in Chicago.

Seating is limited. Please call the Art, Music and Recreation Department at (414) 286-3071 to register.
