Did you know that 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy? It is also the International Year of Natural Fibers and the International Year of Reconciliation, so break out your hemp t-shirt and make up with someone you had a falling out with while combing the skies for meteor showers!
The constellation Orion over Mt. Nemrut in Turkey as it appeared on December 16th, 2008 just before sunrise.
Some of these International Years have been designated by the United Nations. For more information on International Years and Decades as designated by the UN, click here.

Another great source for information on various days of note and celebrations is Chase's Calendar of Events. This wonderful resource gives interesting tidbits of information, such as May 1st being No Pants Day in 2009, and the fact that November 8th, would be Hermann Rorschach's 125th birthday this year. Mr. Rorschach's name may be familiar as he was the developer of the Rorschach inkblot test, a psychological test designed to gain insights into a patient's subconscious.

Chase lists interesting items individual dates as well. For instance, on today's date the longest war in history (the Third Punic War) ended, the Florida State Fair starts, and today is Weatherperson's Day. Those are only a few of the entries for today's date.
