We couldn’t let Black History Month end without mentioning Dr. Wallace Cheatham.
Dr. Cheatham lives and works in Milwaukee. He’s an expert on the music of African American composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a world-renowned composer and organist. His composition “Toccata, Adagio and Fugue for Organ” was honored in England in October of 2006. All of his music utilizes the African American spiritual for inspiration.
Dr. Cheatham’s operatic research explores the African American experience and has been published in international scholarly journals. He interviewed many prominent singers for his book, Dialogues on Opera and the African Experience, which is housed in libraries worldwide---including ours.
The library owns a dvd documentary about his life here.
On most days, you’ll probably see the librarians smiling at him here.
