RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) is a technology that was originally developed for the military during World War II, and has now encompassed all walks of life by making its foray into retail, medicine, education, fast food, the travel industry--- and now Milwaukee Public Library. Using RFID in libraries is just one use among many: in 2009 researchers at Bristol University successfully glued RFID microtransponders to live ants in order to study their behavior.
The new self-checkout stations (using RFID technology) are now "live" at East Library, 1910 E. North Ave.
Work continues at Central Library and libraries on the north side to implement RFID and self-checkout. MPL's south side locations will be converted when work at the north side locations is complete. Library services will not be interrupted during the conversion.
