The World War II Battle of Iwo Jima was immortalized in what would become the only photograph to win the Pulitzer Prize for Photography in the same year as its publication, and has come to be considered one of the most recognizable images of the war. The picture, taken by Joe Rosenthal, actually depicts the second raising of the flag that day. Of the six men in the photo, three did not survive the battle. The last of the survivors to die was John Bradley, who passed away in his hometown of Antigo, Wisconsin in 1994.
