Charles Dickens' classic tale, A Christmas Carol, was first published on December 17, 1843. An immediate success, the initial first printing of 6,000 sold out by Christmas day. Dickens highlighted social injustices of his time, the plight of the poor and general indifference of the wealthy, and crafted a tale speaking to the need of charity to combat the inequities he saw and experienced. A Christmas Carol is now beloved by millions, and has spawned countless films and plays.
