"Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote the droghte of March hath perced to the roote, and bathed every veyne in swich licour of which vertu engendred is the flour"So begins the epic story The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. On this day in 1387, twenty-nine pilgrims set off to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket and decide to have a story-telling contest. What followed is one of the greatest works in the English language. The Canterbury Tales is considered to be a masterpiece of Medieval literature and has been a popular read for seven centuries.
