Maya Angelou was born Marguerite Ann Johnson on April 4th, 1928 in St. Louis, Missouri. Angelou has a long list of occupations and achievements, including civil rights activist, poet, dancer, producer and professor. She is perhaps best known for writing the autobiographical I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which is about the early years of her life. Published in 1969, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings was nominated for a National Book Award in 1970. According to the American Library Association, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings is the third most frequently challenged book from the years 1990-2000. Maya Angelou read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993. The last poet to read at a president's inauguration was Robert Frost in 1961 for John F. Kennedy.
