50th Anniversary of the "I Have a Dream Speech" @MPL

"I Have a Dream" Speech and the March on Washington Display
August 7 to September 11
Central Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Mozart's Grove

Central Library will have a display of historic photos, newspaper clippings, books and other archival material celebrating the anniversary.

"I Have a Dream" Intergenerational Mini-March
Tuesday August 27, 5:30-7 p.m.
Villard Square Branch, 5190 N. 35th Street

Calling all children, elders and everyone in-between! Come together to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington that featured Dr. King's famous speech, "I Have a Dream." Listen to an inspiring story and create signs to carry in a mini-march through the Villard Square Branch. We will reenact the speech and have a special take-home project to help your family keep the dream alive.

Wednesday, August 28
Martin Luther King Library, 310 W. Locust St.
Make Your Own "Dream Bracelet," 2-3 p.m.

String glass beads on a memory wire while making special wishes to the world. For ages 7 and older.

"I Have a Dream" Open Mic Night, 6-7 p.m.
Patrons can perform a song, music piece, dance routine, share some thoughts, or read a poem to express their dream or to reflect on Dr. King's legacy. In addition, guest speaker Nancy Torphy, a participant of the March on Washington, will discuss her memories of attending the March. All ages are welcome to attend this family event. Performers can sign up with a librarian on the day of the event. *Free books will be given away while supplies last.
This is a family event. No use of profanity or explicit acts are allowed. Please limit your performance to 3-5 minutes or less. A CD player will be available for use.

Photo display at Martin Luther King Library
August 12 - September 12

Martin Luther King Library will also have a display from August 12 - September 12 of Martin Luther King photos from his visits to Wisconsin and Milwaukee - including a 1963 visit to the Milwaukee Auditorium. This display is made available in partnership with the Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum. The Milwaukee Journal is the original owner of the photos.
