Join us for The Worlds of the Ghazal with Dr. Syed Akbar Hyder and a performance by Kiran Ahluwalia...
Sunday, October 6th at 2:00 p.m.
Central Library, Centennial Hall
733 N. 8th Street
Composed in sets of two-line verses, the ghazal has long been favored by poets from the Arabic Golden Age to the Ottoman courts to the contemporary English-speaking world. Dr. Syed Akbar Hyder offers a brief history of this form and close, thoughtful readings of work by two Urdu masters--Mir Taqi Mir (1723-1810) and Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869)--which demonstrate the beauty of the form. This lecture is followed by a performance by Juno award-winning Indo-Canadian ghazal singer Kiran Ahluwalia and her accompanist Rez Abbasi, who bring contemporary stylings to this timeless work.
This event is part of the Poetic Voices of the Muslim World program series.
