There's no such thing as free money...

But if there were, you could find it in the new Grant Resources section of the Milwaukee Public Library's Web site. You can get to it by going to Research Resources, then clicking on the Recommended Links option, from there you can navigate to "Grant Resources".

Whether you're looking for funding to start a new business, or you're thinking of starting a non-profit group, you should check out our Grants Resources to see what resources are available to you on the web. We have done the hard work for you by bringing these sites together and providing a short description of them.

The Grants Resources section contains information on Federal grants, on state grants; it also includes links to websites that will help you put your proposal together. There is more grants information available in print as well. If you are interested in those additional resources, be sure to check them out at the Business, Science, and Technology desk at the Central Library.

A helpful online service

Holiday catalogs got you down?

mags.jpg

The holiday season is in full swing, and that means that on top of all that goodwill towards your fellow humans, your mailbox is probably stuffed with catalogs of all shapes and sizes. If the catalogs are starting to outnumber the holiday cards, you may want to consider Catalog Choice.

Catalog Choice is a free, online service that lets you opt out of those pesky catalogs that clog up your mailbox. It will save you time and aggravation, and also helps to preserve the environment.

It's also easy to use. You just sign up, you search for the catalogs you want to decline, and Catalog Choice contacts the companies for you. It can take up to 10 weeks for the process to complete, but once it does you shouldn't receive any more of the unwanted catalogs. If the catalogs continue to come, you just need to let Catalog Choice know, and they will report the infraction for you.

Playaway Collection

playaway.jpg

Thanks to our generous Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library, the neighborhood and Central libraries will each receive new digital audio book collections. The library submitted a single-grant request to the Friends for $10,000 to purchase new “Playaway” audio books. Playaways are the digital content of an entire book pre-loaded into a pocket-size player. There is no need to load CD’s or cassette tapes; you just press “play” and begin listening. Very simple to operate and light to carry, the library is excited to be able to offer this type of media to its patrons. These will hit the shelves in early 2008.
