Recommend a Purchase

Have you ever checked CountyCat for a book, only to find that the Milwaukee Public Library has not purchased it? Because so many books are published every year, we occasionally miss picking one up. You can let us know about books you would like to see the library purchase through our "Recommend a Purchase" feature.
Recommend a Purchase to the Milwaukee Public Library

From the library's home page (www.mpl.org), under the Reader's Resources tab on the left-hand side, you will find the Recommend a Purchase option. Simply fill out the form to the best of your abilities and send it in. If the librarians decide to purchase your request, a hold will be placed on the material for you. If it is decided that the material will not be purchased, an email will be sent to you notifying you of that decision.

Lend a Hand @ Your Library

The Milwaukee Public Library is always looking for volunteers to help support our programs and services. Whether you are a teen, a retiree, or somewhere in between, the library has a volunteer opportunity for you.

Lend a Hand

Library volunteers can help organize special collections, be tutors, homework helpers, early literacy promoters, English conversation coaches, and more. Opportunities especially for teens include becoming a member of the library's Teen Advisory Board or a Summer Book Buddy to a younger child.

Volunteers can donate a few hours of a week or help out with a one time special event. No matter how much time you can give to the library, it is a wonderful way to serve your community.

For more information about volunteer opportunities at MPL or to fill out a volunteer application, take a look at our volunteer Web page.

Milwaukee Historic Photos first anniversary

The month of June marks the one year anniversary of the Milwaukee Historic Photos digital collection.
A sneak peek of one of the photos to be added soon, this is the Triangle Building which used to be located near the Germania Building.

The collection launched with 150 photos of historic Milwaukee. Now, one year later, the collection consists of 750 photos.

So far the photos have mainly been from the Historic Buildings subject heading. In fact, that portion of the collection is almost finished, and will hopefully be completed by the end of the summer.

We have started adding photos of Milwaukee's streets. Wisconsin Avenue photos have been being added slowly almost since the beginning, but now we have started adding photos from the Streets subject heading of the physical collection. Street names beginning with "A", such as West Arthur Avenue, are being added, and we are going from there.

Keep watching the collection to see what else becomes available!

Milwaukee Justice Center

Milwaukee Legal CLinic.bmp
Do you need legal forms or guidance related to divorce, child custody, child support, landlord/tenant disputes, name changes, or small claims? The new website of the Milwaukee Justice Center may be able to help. The Milwaukee Bar Association and the Marquette University Law School have formed a partnership to provide services to low-income people who need to represent themselves in court. In addition, volunteer staff are available in Room G9 of the County Courthouse. They also host free, walk-in legal clinics for civil cases:

Family Law Clinic:

Monday 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

1. Regardless of your residency or card-holding status you can call MPL's Ready Reference service at 414-286-3011. This service is offered Monday-Tuesday from 10:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. and Wednesday-Saturday 9:00 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Librarians will answer non-research, factual questions that don't take more than 3-5 minutes to answer.

3. MPL has a number of digital collections and we're working on more. Collections include Milwaukee Historic Photos, Milwaukee Leaders, Remember When and more.

5. Using our CountyCat catalog you can access links and RSS feeds to new materials divided by subject, genre and format. You can always find the link to new materials on the CountyCat home page under the More Information heading. Click here to check it out.
